Appraisal:
After my
first read-through of Waves, I was
disappointed, but couldn’t understand why. I knew it wasn’t the musical
festival setting. If my budget allowed, I’d be at one every summer weekend. So
I decided to take some time and then gave it a second read. I came to the
conclusion that maybe, in a figurative sense, the music was too loud (and yes,
that might mean I’m too old). The “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” ethos
overwhelmed what seemed to be an attempt at a coming-of-age story line. I saw
the results, the characters seemed to have moved into a more adult place, but
with the exception of Luke, one of the three main characters, I’m still wondering
how or why that happened. Maybe contemporaries of the characters
(twenty-somethings) will get what I didn’t.
